This FIRE percentage calculator works out your FIRE number — the portfolio size that would cover your annual spending at a safe withdrawal rate — and what share of that number your current portfolio already represents.
Your FIRE number, in one figure
Divide your annual spending by your safe withdrawal rate (commonly 4%) and you get your FIRE number: the portfolio size that could theoretically fund your lifestyle indefinitely. Comparing your current invested portfolio to that number shows how far along the path to financial independence you already are.
Example
With a €120,000 invested portfolio, €24,000 in annual expenses and a 4% withdrawal rate, the FIRE number is €600,000 — meaning this portfolio has already reached 20% of the way to financial independence.
