How much to tip in the US
These are common guidelines, not rules:
- Sit-down restaurants: 15-20% of the bill before tax; 20% or more for excellent service.
- Large groups: many restaurants add an automatic gratuity of around 18-20% for big parties, so check the bill before adding more.
- Bars: about $1-2 per drink, or 15-20% of the tab.
- Food delivery: 15-20%, with a few dollars minimum on small orders.
- Takeout and counter service: optional; leaving something is a nice gesture but not expected.
