How are worked hours calculated?

Check-out time minus check-in time, minus the break. The result is shown in hours and minutes and also in decimal hours (useful for payroll and invoices).

Does it work with night shifts?

Yes. If check-out is earlier than check-in, the shift is treated as crossing midnight and 24 hours are added accordingly.

What are decimal hours?

It's expressing time in decimal form instead of hours and minutes: 8 h 30 min equals 8.5 hours. That's the format used when multiplying by an hourly rate.
