Charging is cheaper than filling up

One of the biggest advantages of an electric car is the cost per kilometer. Work out what each charge actually costs you depending on where and when you charge.

Example

Charging a 60 kWh battery from 20% to 80% at €0.15/kWh with 90% charging efficiency uses 40 kWh of energy and costs about €6.00. A public fast charger at a higher price per kWh would cost noticeably more for the same charge.

Home charging on an off-peak rate is typically the cheapest option; public fast chargers are usually the most expensive.

How much does it cost to charge an electric car?
It depends on the battery capacity, how much of it you charge, and above all the price per kWh: charging at home on an off-peak rate is very cheap, while fast public chargers cost noticeably more.
Why does charging efficiency matter?
Because some energy is lost during the charging process (heat, conversion losses). Delivering 30 kWh of usable charge to the battery can require drawing around 33 kWh from the grid.
Does the result change with battery size?
Yes — a larger battery charged over the same percentage range uses proportionally more energy, so the cost scales with both battery capacity and the percentage charged.
